Sypnosis:[]

As Hal sleeps on the couch with his mouth open, the boys play "Horse" by trying to toss popcorn into it. Hal moves his head as Dewey takes a shot which he claims is unfair. Malcolm says it's too bad for him.

One evening, Hal and Dewey watch TV, Dewey asks him about a bizarre looking chip after he eats it he has to refill the bowl. He then finds an ant on the counter and knows it as a scout looking for food. He is determined not to let it get back to the others. Since it's bedtime, Dewey prepares for "Bedtime Express" and jumps on Hal's back like a rider on a horse despite the obvious strain on his dad.

At school, Reese's girlfriend Alison is planning to go to a formal dance at the school. He doesn't want to go as he doesn't want to rent a tux and a limousine since it would deplete the money he's saved for a leather jacket, so he confides in Malcolm that he's going to start a fight with her and get her to break up with him. Then he'll apologize after the dance and get back together with her and then it's smooth sailing until her birthday. Reese leaves after Malcolm is called over by Mr. Herkabe for an emergency study session. Malcolm reminds him they had one last night but Herkabe is driving them to study more than ever for the upcoming Academic Octathalon since the competition is fierce and their opponents are geniuses as well so they need to work through lunch every day until then. Malcolm thought it was supposed to be fun but Stevie says fun is for losers and the rest of his friends have had to make sacrifices as well. Kevin had to blow off his cello lessons, Lloyd missed his uncle's funeral and Dabney has been forced to tank his grades for the past three months to be the team's mandatory "C" student. Stevie reaches for a sandwich but Herkabe tells them it's not to eat it's just so he can avoid trouble for making them study without any food.

At home Malcolm complains to his mother that he wants to quit because of how stupid it is, but Lois feels that extracurricular activities are good for him and he won't be able to coast into college just on straight A's and he could make new friends that can help him out in the future. Malcolm reminds her they'd all be nerds, Lois says there's nothing nerdy about spending a weekend earning a trophy that shows how smart he is, she tells him he will be doing it anyway whether he likes it or not.

When Hal finds another ant, he goes on the hunt. But he has to break it to Dewey that "Bedtime Express" is for little boys and a big boy like Dewey hurts him when he rides. Dewey says he understands that, but tells Hal that he won't love him anymore. Hal is hurt by his words and informs Dewey he can't say hurtful things just because he doesn't get what he wants. Dewey apologizes but states he can't change how he feels about it.

Reese's attempts to insult and start a food fight with Alison backfire and she is so enraged by him throwing food at her. So, he must try another tactic to avoid going to the dance with her. Reese attempts to insult her about her dress being ugly, but Alison sees past it and tells him off she doesn't want to see him for the next three days until the dance.

Meanwhile, at the Ranch, Francis and Piama start to argue when he decides to put it aside and just spend time with her. He tells Otto the next day that they had a perfect evening and mentions that Otto and Gretchen don't argue about things like household chores. Otto agrees that their relationship is good that way, too. The next moment, he and Gretchen are arguing hotly.

At home, Dewey still insists he doesn't love his dad anymore. Hal decides to ground him, but Dewey tells him he can't control how he feels. Hal tells him he'll buy him a new bike, but it doesn't make a difference.

Meanwhile, Malcolm and the Krelboynes are on a bus singing "99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall" with square roots involved when Herkabe finds out that the science portion of the quiz will involve organic chemistry and threatens to kick anyone off the bus that can't handle it.

Otto and Gretchen make up and Otto asks a guest about how he and his new wife divide the chores. The couple inevitably end up in a furious argument.

At the quiz, Malcolm finds out that Herkabe expects them to cheat and that the others are fine with it. He takes out his frustrations on a vending machine when a young man named Joey who claims to be responsible for those machines confronts him. Malcolm explains that his friends want him to do something he feels is wrong and Joey tells him not to do it. It is not that easy as he would still be a party to it as his friends would still cheat. Joey advises him just to leave so he can't be blamed.

Reese deliberately picks a fight with Lois in order by dropping a chocolate ice cream cone he was eating on the living room rug to get grounded. His plan immediately backfires as she has figured out what he's trying to do. Lois grounds Reese for a week, confined to his room with no privileges. However, she mentions that she refuses to uphold it until after he's taken Alison to the dance. Reese is horrified, pointing out he doesn't want to go. Lois points out that he made a promise to his girlfriend and she's going to make him uphold it, possibly implying that unlike Nicki, she likes Alison. She points out that some people are born brain smart and others are born crafty and street smart, but Reese was born neither book nor street smart.

Later on, Malcolm calls Lois and threatens to leave the hotel where he's staying at with the Krelboynes and hitchhike home if she doesn't pick him up.

Arguing continues as a ranch-hand and his wife ignore the happy Francis and Piama.

Malcolm gets in his mother's car and insists he's leaving. Lois reminds him that one day she'll be an old lady and he'll be the one looking after her. Right before she pulls off, he looks through the window and sees Joey in a hotel room with one of the rival teams, revealing himself to be a competitor too. Realizing he's been played for a fool, he tells her that he is staying and she can punish him when he gets home. Lois agrees to the deal and Malcolm gets out to challenge Joey.

Hal tries to reason with Dewey and then orders him to say he loves him. Dewey says it without emotion, telling him they are just words.

Malcolm hatches a plan to teach the coaches a lesson. The gang puts Dabney in a swimsuit to get a maid to open the door so they can steal the answers to the quiz and make copies. An arguing couple walks by showing the chain of arguing originating from Francis and Piama has gone off the rails.

A desperate Reese tries to hit his foot with a baseball bat, but Alison sees this and stops him. She tells him she suspects that he is trying to get out of taking her to the dance by injuring himself. Reese tries to lie his way out of it, but Alison doesn't believe him and tells him to be honest with her. Finally, he confesses that he likes her, but he doesn't want to go to the dance because he is concerned that she will dump him afterwards. Reese wants Alison to let him out of the original promise as a means to avoid breaking up and that he still wants her to be his girlfriend. She appreciates him for being honest with her, but tells him made a promise and she wants him to keep it. Alison gives Reese the details of what she wants and tells him they'll have a wonderful time at the dance... and then she'll give him what he wants and break up with him. As a result, he ends up single, penniless and grounded. In turn, Alison had gotten her revenge on Reese for trying to renege out of his promise.

At the octathalon, Herkabe becomes nice to Malcolm thinking he stole the quiz questions and outcome to give North High an advantage. The moderator begins with history, which the Krelboynes answer immediately. Several questions are answered by students from other teams before he can finish asking them. Before long, they are all answering before he can barely get a word out. He orders all coaches to see him privately. Herkabe realizes that Malcolm stole the quiz questions and gave copies of it to all of the teams.

Hal prepares to spray for ants when Dewey tells him goodnight. Hal tells him he doesn't have to say he loves him since it's just an expression, but that he loves Dewey. But he doesn't love the ants and sprays heavily, soon becoming overcome with fumes and passing out. Dewey returns and sees his father unconscious. He panics and pulls his dad out from under the sink, begging him to revive and telling him he loves him. Hal awakens and wonders how Dewey could have pulled him away. Dewey supposes that he is bigger and stronger and now realizes that he has outgrown his old bedtime routine. Hal tells him he loves him and Dewey says he loves him, too. Dewey squashes the ant watching them.

The moderator returns and announces that each school will take home one award and no one is to say anything about this incident. Joey congratulates Malcolm on the match being well-played and wonders what would happen if they'd played it straight. His coach chastises him on how much better Malcolm is and drags him off.

At the ranch, Francis fields a call from a customer who is canceling because of an argument with his wife. Francis asks why one argument would cause this and agrees to answer a question. Suddenly, his eyes narrow and Piama walks in, indicating that the circle has come around again.

Trivia[]

  • The song that plays in the cold opening of this episode is 'Montgomery Mojo" by Zino & Tommy.
  • This is the last appearance of Dabney, Kevin, Alison and Flora Mayesh.
  • The hotel where the science competition is held is the Best Western Plus Carriage Inn on 5525 Sepulveda Blvd, Sherman Oaks, CA 91411. The Shell petrol station that can be seen in the background of a few shots is still present to this day.[1]
  • Lois points out to Reese that some people are born book smart and others are crafty and street smart. Out of the boys, Malcolm is book smart and a generic genius. Francis is very crafty, street smart and a natural leader. However, despite being a music genius, Dewey is a rarity of being both book and street smart. While Reese as Lois points out is neither despite his culinary skills, just an idiot and a delinquent. This was followed up in Dewey's Special Class.
  • Unlike any of Malcolm or Francis’s girlfriends Lois actually likes Alison being Reese’s girlfriend, possibly because having a relationship makes Reese into less of a troublemaker and more motivated to behave himself.
  • Alison dumping Reese at the Winter Ball's dance is her plans for revenge over him trying to renege out of his promise.
  • Originally, Vincent Berry was supposed to return as Dave Spath whom is attending a rival high school and tricked Malcolm into leaving. When he finds out Spath's plans, Malcolm teaches him and everyone else a lesson that they'll never forget. This was ultimately cut due to how expensive it would've been to bring back Berry. Thus, Spath was replaced with Joey.
